Review: Salt & Straw Ice Cream

Written by Sophia Makarewycz and  Zoe Greenspan

Salt & Straw Ice Cream, a public favorite, is expanding to Burlingame! This ice cream chain began as a small food stand in Portland, Oregon and was founded by two cousins, Tyler and Kim Malek. This duo was determined to create a place where family and friends could gather to enjoy delicious ice cream. Needless to say, their goal was achieved, as Salt & Straw Ice Cream has spread throughout the West Coast, with over sixteen locations.

Salt & Straw is no ordinary ice cream shop because of its exotic, yet mouthwatering flavors. With flavors ranging from “Bone Marrow and Smoked Cherries” to “Chocolate Gooey Brownie,” Salt & Straw offers options for both daring and classic ice cream lovers. Although some of their flavors may seem extreme and unappetizing at first, they are adored by devoted ice cream lovers. For example, Charlotte Druckman of the Wall Street Journal comments, “Salt & Straw ice cream is the new standard to beat.”

I tried Salt & Straw for the first time when I traveled to Los Angeles in June. As someone who has tried Salt & Straw my observations may be useful as the flavors and experiences are unique.

As my mom and I first arrived, we were surprised by all the unexpected flavors that were offered. The line was long, and sometimes moved a little slow, leaving us enough time to narrow down our choices. After around 15 minutes of waiting in line, a nice employee started helping us. At first they asked us if we wanted to try any of the flavors. The employee let us try as many flavors as we needed, and this was definitely very necessary. I think this was what really made the experience so much better than what I experienced at other ice cream shops. I decided to get the “Salted Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough” while my mom got the “Almond Brittle With Salted Ganache”. I think we can both agree that it was something very unique and tasty. The serving sizes were larger than I was expecting and it was definitely good I wasn’t too full. Clearly, Salt & Straw is a fantastic addition to Burlingame Avenue and to the rest of the west coast.
